i know we havent posted since last year (sad) but things have been pretty busy. Anyhow i just wanted to pass this along to those of you who find your way here...

Saturday was great! We all had a fun time creating the sculptures and educating the public! We got over 100 signatures for our petition and spoke to many more people who were very interested in recycling and our work. Thank you to all who have made this project a success!

This past week has been crazy busy, we are learning the in's and out's of publicity! Ryan and I have come to the conclusion it's a full-time job! After getting the Museum's approval we rushed into action to get the word out and FAST! Thanks to Betsy Vandercook, the President of the Chicago Recycling Coalition (www.chicagorecycling.org), we had a complete list of media sources to contact and advice on how to do it best!

We refined our Press Release until it was perfect, then rushed to our dear friend Alan Cohen (www.alan-cohen.com) who let us fax and email the news to a 100 different media sources. Thank you!

Since then the RIC team members have met up to construct the eight clear plastic garbage bags for the sculpture which measure 12.5' in length each! We have completed the final collection of the 5-week pick-up program for the 15 houses, cleaned and dryed all the recyclables, gathered the surveys, graphed the information, created a huge wooden sign for the event, washed all the blue bins, made RIC t-shirts and are preparing to host 2 Canadians from the Canadian RIC Team who are able to join us for the event! It's been "active".

The response for this project has been overwhelming and we are very excited about Saturday! The Canadian contingent will be arriving shortly so I better stop writing for now.

WE DID IT!!!

ITS OFFICIAL!! We are now officially creating our public sculpture at the Notebaert Nature Museum of Chicago!!!!

So, come on out to the Nature Museum and help promote recycling with us in a fun atmosphere of community art making this Saturday the 21st from 10am to 4pm!!!

We haven't posted in a long time because we have been so busy! Keep reading to hear all of the exciting things we have done in the past two weeks...

jenna had a great meeting with the Commissioner of the Environment for Chicago, a Public Recycling Educator, the Project Manager of Chciago's Zero Waste Program, and the Alderman for Ward 49, Joe Moore. The meeting was set up by Joe Moore and was a great chance for us to make new contacts and expand our recycling project while promoting serious change within the city!

Our biggest challenge recently has been the finalization of our sculpture installation and we have been meeting like crazy to create ideas, sketches, presentations, and RIC shirts together! We are hoping for a space in the front courtyard of the Notebaert Nature Museum, they have been very supportive of the idea but have not been able to finalize anything with us yet (a big stresser!) Here are some sketches for the final idea we came up with and a picture of one of our late night meetings that went on for hours and hours and hours...

The public event will be facilitated by Canadian, American, and Korean artists, some who have been working with us all along, others who we will bring in especially for this event. We will start the event at 10am on Saturday the 21st and will end at 5pm. There will be 10 artists facilitating the event, including jenna and myself, all of us will be dressed in the same t-shirts with our recycling logo printed on them. We will be actively engaging with the community to answer any questions and promote recycling while we facilitate the actual building of the sculptures.

The ideas we ended up with were actually inspired by one of our team members Jung A. She has done amazing work in the past... look at these images...

Jung A will also be continuing our neighborhood recycling project after jenna and myself leave the country! She has a gallery show coming up that deals with environmental issues so she will collect the materials just as we have and use it for another installation!

So to wrap up, we are here going crazy with work, but making really exciting things happen! look out for the finalization of the space and times for the event and a sneak peak of our recycling team member shirts (you'll want to own one after you see them!)

Snuggle Bins!

Hello all! Things are rolling right along, we have a meeting tomorrow with the Director of Recycling for the City of Chicago and the Superintendent for Streets and Sanitation for Ward 49. We will be presenting our Snuggle Bins to them, but you get a sneak peak right here and now!

The bins were designed by Dave Waddell an industrial design student at the Ontario College of Art and Design with support from the Ontario College of Art and Design Student Union. In fact this entire project was funded by the Student Union!

Week 2 Pick Up!

Yesterday marked our second week of pick ups and 13 out of the 15 houses put out their blue bins filled (some overflowing) with recycling! We have moved our first load to our storage facility and will be moving the new load soon.

The neighborhood response has been overwhelming, people approach us on the street and ask if they can join as well.
After the pick up and sorting yesterday we decided to take a trip to the last operating landfill within Chicago city limits to take some pictures. We weren't allowed on the restricted property but we found our ways to get what we wanted anyhow! here are some pictures...

Recycling Intervention Committee In Action!

(faut art) has given birth to "The Recycling Intervention C ommittee" (RIC)!

We are a group of artists, designers, students and alumni from The Ontario College of Art and Design and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago working together to promote recycling in Chicago.

The project is well on it's way...

Here is a quick update to fill readers in our the project's development to date:

15 homes in the Rogers Park Neighbourhood of Chicago have jumped on the project, accpected their blue bins and have begun putting out there recycling each week for the next month! Today marks the first collection day, which was a huge success! 11 of the 15 houses set out their heaping blue bins on the curb for the RIC crew to collect. We have one little puzzle to figure out... one of the blue bins disappeared from a home's yard late tuesday night without a trace!

We hope to show the accumilation of excess materials humans produce/use, which can be diverted from landfills to be reduced, reused and recycled. Our Committee aims at creating public awareness surrounding the ecological footprint humans create and education on how we can reduce it. The materials collected over the next month will be used to create a large scale public sculpture to engage the public in these issues in late July.

We have already recieved a great deal of interest and support from The Chicago Recycling Coalition, Ward 49's Alderman Joe Moore, a local museum and several other City Officials.
